Historic Nogales

In Nogales, Historic Main Street is a place filled with wonder from across the border and around the world.

Walking Tours

The cultural fabric of Nogales is woven from the strands of the cattle, commerce, retail, railroad, mining, military, and produce industries. And if the warp is industry, the weave is people. The city was a cultural vessel that embraced Asian, European, Mexican, Anglo-Saxon, Middle Eastern, and Black influences and, today, still lends depth to the tapestry of Nogales.

On the Volume One walking tour, MIMGP3296aestro Ochoa will escort you through the historic treasures of Nogales. He thrilled generations of Nogalians by showing up with his bicycle cart filled with candy each day after school. The famous cart, now on display in the Pimería Alta Museum, and, his store, El Charrito, can still be seen through layers of paint when you make the stop on Elm Street. Maestro Ochoa represents important strands of the Nogales fabric including innovation, commitment, and diversity.

Follow the Blue Tour along Morley and Grand Avenues and enjoy the commercial center of early Nogales. For the aerobically inclined, try the Red Tour up the many wonderful historic homes on Crawford Street. It is a steep climb with many rewards. The Gold Tour is the route for those who choose to drive and walk the tracks of time from then ’til now. Maestro Ochoa says, ‘let the tours begin.’

Today this Entrepreneurial Development Area on Morley Avenue is called The “Little” Mercado in honor of John Little, a Nogales resident and former board member whose guidance moved the Nogales Main Street Program is a positive direction. Located in the heart of the Nogales business district, The “Little” Mercado offers small enterprises a centrally located place to operate their business and features additional parking for the downtown area. Historic Ambos Nogales: Two Sister Cities Were One

At one time, Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Sonora, were one big, relaxed two-nation border community. The urban fabric is now split in two, separated by an international border, yet the two communities, called Ambos Nogales, remain heavily reliant on each other. Ambos Nogales continues to share its families, cultures, heritages, economies and identities. The communities of Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Sonora, México comprise the largest international border community in Arizona, with an estimated combined population exceeding 400,000 people.
