Historic Nogales

In Nogales, Historic Main Street is a place filled with wonder from across the border and around the world.

Downtown Shopping District

The Nogales Main Street movement gave birth a local shopping district that advocates for community self-reliance, local empowerment, and the rebuilding of traditional commercial districts. The downtown capitalizes on its unique assets: its distinctive architecture, pedestrian-friendly environment, personal service, pride in local ownership, and a heartfelt sense of community.Volume One: Commercial & Residential Tour.

Fueled by Local Entrepreneurs

The effort began over a decade aDSC_6681go, when the downtown property owners and merchants decided to take the future into their own hands. Committing and pooling their own resources, the organization began the process of building a commercial district responsive to the markets of the new century. The initial goal was to attract more visitors and stimulate growth in the central business district.

Since inception, Nogales Community Development has brought over $3 million dollars in federal, state, local and private funds to the community. In response to the Historic Main Street initiative, eight business and building owners have personally invested in excess of $2 million in improvements to their properties. Visitors to downtown will enjoy the below features.

Affordable downtown parking

Nogales Community Development Corporation owns and manages three parking lots that provide parking for the employees of the downtown merchants, freeing up street parking for shoppers.

Public art projects

Murals and other public art projects are scattered throughout the area, reflecting Nogales’ unique culture and history.

Improved lighting and pedestrian seating

Lighting was modified on Terrace and Nelson Avenues, and colorful benches painted by local youth were placed throughout the downtown area.

Maintenance and remodeling of Karam Park restroom facilities

The Downtown Merchants signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” with the City of Nogales to update and maintain the downtown bathrooms. To ensure cleanliness, there is an attendant on hand during business hours.

Morley Avenue Entrepreneurial Development Area

The organization transformed a vacant lot on Morley Avenue into additional parking and install kiosks to provide commercial space for local micro-businesses.

Morley Avenue Streetscape and Terrace Avenue Improvements

The organization is an active partner with the City of Nogales on both of these major revitalization projects.

Historic Ambos Nogales: Two Sister Cities Were One

At one time, Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Sonora, were one big, relaxed two-nation border community. The urban fabric is now split in two, separated by an international border, yet the two communities, called Ambos Nogales, remain heavily reliant on each other. Ambos Nogales continues to share its families, cultures, heritages, economies and identities. The communities of Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Sonora, México comprise the largest international border community in Arizona, with an estimated combined population exceeding 400,000 people.
